Feeding/Swallowing Disorders - How Can an SLP Help?

Updated: Jan 17, 2023

Feeding and swallowing disorders in children can be a serious issue that can affect their overall health and development. These disorders can manifest in a variety of ways, from difficulty swallowing solid foods to an aversion to certain textures or flavors.

One of the most effective ways to address feeding and swallowing disorders in children is through the help of a speech-language pathologist (SLP). SLP's are trained to work with individuals of all ages who have difficulty with communication, however, they are also critical in treating issues related to eating and swallowing.

An SLP will first conduct an evaluation to determine the specific issues that a child is facing with their feeding and swallowing. This may include observations of the child during meal time, as well as assessments of their oral motor skills and muscle tone.

Once the evaluation is complete, the SLP will work with the child and their family to develop a treatment plan tailored to their specific needs. This may include exercises to improve oral motor skills and muscle tone in their articulators (tongue, lips, jaw) as well as strategies for modifying the child's diet and mealtime routines to make eating and swallowing easier.

In some cases, an SLP may also work with other professionals such as occupational therapists, dietitians, and physicians to develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

One of the most important aspects of treatment is providing education and support to the child and their family. This may include teaching the child how to properly chew and swallow different types of foods, as well as providing guidance on how to create a positive and supportive mealtime environment.

Feeding and swallowing disorders can be a challenging issue for children and their families; as each child and case is virtually never the same. However, with the help of an SLP, it's possible to make significant improvements. Through a combination of therapy, education, and support, children with feeding and swallowing disorders can learn to eat and swallow more comfortably and confidently.
